The desk behind Nest Grain

We write about furniture the way we wish someone had explained it to us. Measurements first, opinions second.

What we do

Nest Grain is an independent furniture publication. We research the pieces people actually shop for — sleeper sofas, TV stands, storage benches, display cabinets, vanities, side tables, outdoor lounge chairs — and publish plain-English guidance on which ones fit, which ones last, and which ones to skip.

Our mission is simple. Furniture is expensive, awkward to return, and usually bought in a hurry from a photograph. We want you to know the dimensions, the clearances and the trade-offs before the delivery truck arrives, not after.

How this started

Nest Grain began in 2024 out of a genuinely frustrating afternoon. A 65-inch television arrived, the stand that had been ordered to match it was 55 inches wide, and nothing in the product listing had made that mismatch obvious.

Looking for help online produced two kinds of pages. Beautiful interiors blogs with no numbers in them at all, and thin affiliate round-ups that listed ten products without explaining a single one. Neither answered the only question that mattered: will this fit my room.

So we started writing the pages we could not find. Every guide begins with the dimensional question, then works outward to build quality, materials, assembly and value. That order has never changed.

What we cover

  • Decorating, styling and sizing — proportion, walkway clearance, placement and the measurements that decide whether a room works. Browse sizing.
  • Furniture types and comparisons — what actually separates one category, mechanism or material from another. Browse comparisons.
  • DIY, assembly and repair — building it correctly, fixing the wobble, and getting a second decade out of what you own. Browse DIY.
  • Reviews — written recommendations with a clear pick, a runner-up, and an honest note about who should walk away. Browse reviews.

How we research

Nest Grain is a research-based publication. We do not conduct hands-on testing, and we never claim to.

That distinction matters enough that we lead with it rather than bury it. Our recommendations are built from documentation, not from a workshop.

For every guide we work through:

  • Manufacturer specification sheets — dimensions, weight capacity, materials, finish and warranty terms.
  • Published assembly manuals and care instructions, which often reveal hardware quality and real assembly difficulty.
  • Verified owner reviews gathered across multiple retailers, read for recurring patterns rather than isolated complaints.
  • Published safety and construction standards where they apply, such as tip-over guidance and tempered glass requirements.
  • Direct comparison against the alternatives in the same size and price bracket.

Where the evidence is thin, we say so in the article. Where a product is wrong for a common situation, we say that too. A recommendation is only useful if it also tells you when to walk away.

Who writes here

Articles are published under the Nest Grain desk, our small editorial team. We are furniture researchers and writers, not licensed contractors, structural engineers or interior designers. For structural work, electrical work or anything involving the fabric of your home, please consult a qualified professional.

How we make money

Nest Grain earns commission through affiliate links, primarily the Amazon Associates programme. When you buy through one of our links, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Brands cannot pay for a recommendation, a position in a ranking, or a more favourable write-up. We do not accept payment in exchange for coverage. Full detail is in our affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

Specifications change and manufacturers revise products without announcement. If you spot a measurement or claim that no longer matches reality, write to us at hello@nestgrain.com and we will check it and update the page.
