Cookie Policy

The small files this site uses, what each one is for, and how to refuse them.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. Some are set by us, some by services we use. Similar technologies such as pixels and local storage work the same way, and this policy covers those too.

What we use, and why

  • Strictly necessary — set by WordPress and our host to serve pages, keep the site secure, filter spam, and remember an administrator session. The site cannot function without these. Typically session-length to around one year.
  • Preferences — remember small choices, such as details you entered when leaving a comment, so you do not have to type them again. Typically up to one year.
  • Analytics — set by Google Analytics to count visits, distinguish returning visitors, and show us which guides people find useful. Reporting is aggregate; we do not use it to identify individuals. Typically up to two years.
  • Affiliate attribution — set by retailers such as Amazon when you click one of our links, so that a resulting purchase is credited to us. These are set by the retailer under its own policy, and last for the window that retailer defines, commonly 24 hours for Amazon.

We do not use cookies for advertising retargeting, and we do not sell or share cookie data with anyone for their own marketing.

Consent

Strictly necessary cookies are set automatically because the site cannot work without them. Where the law in your region requires it, non-essential cookies such as analytics are set only after you consent, and you can change or withdraw that choice at any time using the controls below.

Managing cookies in your browser

Every major browser lets you view, block and delete cookies. Look under settings for privacy or site data:

  • Chrome — Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies and Site data.
  • Safari — Settings or Preferences, then Privacy, where you can block cookies and manage stored website data.
  • Firefox — Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Cookies and Site Data.
  • Edge — Settings, then Cookies and site permissions.

Most browsers also offer a private or incognito window, which discards cookies when you close it. Google additionally provides a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics across all sites.

What happens if you block them

You can read every guide on Nest Grain with cookies disabled. Blocking them may mean comment fields no longer remember your details, and it will mean we lose the anonymous signal that tells us which research is worth continuing. Blocking affiliate cookies does not change the price you pay; it simply means we earn nothing if you buy.

Changes and contact

We update this policy when the services we use change. The date at the top always reflects the current version. For how cookie data fits into everything else we hold, see our privacy policy, or write to hello@nestgrain.com.
